Goal-setting can be a powerful strategy for inciting action and increasing productivity (Locke & Latham, 1990) and meaningful goals can be a sustainable source of happiness (Niemic, Ryan, and Deci, 2009). But this only works if our goals are congruent with our values and actionable. The goal of this project is to help people translate their values into actions. Our approach develops and integrates tools for value-based goal-setting and hierarchical goal-setting. Value-based goal-setting methods help people refine their personal values and translate them into life goals. Hierarchical goal-setting methods help people to break the resulting life goals down into a series of increasingly more proximal sub-goals that connects them to actionable intentions. This allows people to be intrinsically motivated and have a clear plan for how to achieve the goals that are most valuable to them. We are currently testing a chatbot that guides people through the process of value-driven hierarchical goal-setting by asking them a few short questions.
